The WIC-1B-U, or 1-port ISDN BRI with intergrated NT1 (U WAN interface), inserts into a mixed-media network module or directly into the WIC slot to add BRI connectivity via a WIC. This allows administrators to maximize valuable slot space while providing additional connectivity options, such as Ethernet, on the same module. The WIC-1B-U has not been sold or engineered by Cisco since December 2002, but is still commonly used. It is important to note that the WIC-1B-U cannot be used with Cisco 1603 or 1604 base units and does not support hot swap, however no hardware damage will occur if it is swapped while power is on.
