The NM-16ESW is a 16-port 10/100 EtherSwitch Network Module for Cisco 2600, 2800, 3600, 3700, 3800 series routers (note that the Cisco 2801 Platform is not supported by the NM-16ESW). It offers branch office customers the ability to integrate switching and routing in a single platform. Combining Layer 3 flexible WAN routing and low-density line-rate Layer 2 switching, this EtherSwitch module provides straightforward configuration, remarkably easy deployment and integrated management in one platform.

The combination of Cisco 2600, 2800, 3600, 3700, and 3800 Series routers and the NM-16ESW EtherSwitch module utilizes the powerful features available in both Catalyst switching and Cisco IOS software. The module hardware supports 802.1p Layer 2 prioritization, while Cisco IOS software supports Layer 3 DiffServ and Class of Service (CoS) markings for critical business data. The NM-16ESW EtherSwitch module has another unique application. With Cisco 2600, 2800, 3600, 3700, and 3800 Series routers, it offers a Cisco DCN (Data Communications Network) operations and facilities management solution. The Cisco DCN solution can be deployed easily by using Cisco routers and Catalyst switches which ultimately delivers an out-of-band network used by service providers and large enterprises for managing their primary networks. The Cisco 16-port EtherSwitch NM is supported on Cisco IOS Software release 12.2(8)T and greater versions.
