The SPA-IPSEC-2G from Cisco Systems, also called the Cisco 7600 Series/Catalyst 6500 Series IPSec VPN Shared Port Adapter, is a Gigabit Ethernet IP Security cryptographic SPA that one may install in a Cisco 7600 series router to successfully increase hardware acceleration for IPSec decryption and encryption, IKE key generation, and generic routing encapsulation—services needed when one configures an IPSec virtual private network, also known as a VPN.

Implementation of IPSec in Cisco IOS enhances the entire array of security protocols including Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP), Authentication Header (AH), and IKE. Because these activities consume significant resources and cause difficulty in achieving line-rate transmission speeds over highly secure VPNs, some platforms with larger VPN bandwidth requirements now implement BITW IPSec hardware cards in addition to the hardware forwarding engines. Such platforms are able to off-load policy enforcement and bulk encryption/ forwarding from the Route Processor eliminating the need for it to look at each packet moving through the router. This successfully reduces the burden on resources allowing them to be used for key management, session establishment, and additional features.
