With Category 5 UTP 10/100/1000Base-T connectivity, the WS-X4548-GB-RJ45 boasts auto-negotiating technology, multi-seed autosensing, and is a cost-efficient wiring-closet investment due to its ability to allow Fast Ethernet desktops to upgrade to Gigabit Ethernet without the need to replace the switch line cards.

In addition, the WS-X4548-GB-RJ45 offers the propensity to, due to its 48 ports being grouped into six groups of eight ports per group, utilize common circuitry within each group effectively multiplexing the group into a unified, non-blocking, full-duplex Gigabit Ethernet connection, so that it connects to the internal switch fabric. Frames received within each group of ports are buffered and then sent to the shared Gigabit Ethernet link to the internal switch fabric. The flow is controlled by sending pause frames to the remote port which temporarily stops traffic, preventing frame loss, if the amount of data ever exceeds buffer capacity.
