Cisco NPE-G1 is also referred to as the Cisco 7200 NPE-G1 Network Processing Engine with 3 GE/FE/E ports and includes three Ethernet interfaces as components of the system CPU. Located on the same piece of silicon as the CPU, these interfaces can run at diverse speeds from 10Mbps Ethernet to 1000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet. Because the interfaces feed directly into the CPU at ultra-fast internal chip speeds, there is no bus bottleneck. Bus bandwidth is freed up and able to be utilized for WAN port adapters because high-speed LAN interfaces that once shared peripheral component interconnect bus bandwidth with other I/O controllers and port adaptors can be moved to the processor.

Cisco NPE-G1 provides incredible performance of up to 1 million PPS in Cisco Express Forwarding switching. This marks an increase of up to 250 percent over the NPE-400 which is a member of the Cisco 7200 Series. In addition, it doubles the amount of available DRAM to 1 GB and offers three Gigabit Ethernet/Fast Ethernet ports that do not take up bandwidth ports. The NPE-G1 offers the ability to upgrade easily.
